International Summer School on Situation Awareness in Cognitive Technologies 2021

Theory and Application

About the School

Situation Awareness in Cognitive Technologies is a trending research direction that gained a lot of interest from the industry in recent years. Situation awareness is the key to provide the best possible user experience and to supply the user with the most relevant content - by establishing a grounded assessment of interactions, actions, etc. based on the environmental elements and corresponding events. Therefore, the summer school aims to present the fundamental aspects of situation awareness in cognitive technologies which can be discussed in an interdisciplinary context. There are a couple of aspects to consider: Situation Awareness, Cognitive Technologies, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) and Explainable AI (XAI). Especially the HCI context provides a link between theory and application which receives special attention in this summer school along with the recent trends in Explainable AI. To make this school an interactive learning experience, we would encourage the participants to share their research presentations (posters) related to the above-mentioned topics.

This year’s edition intends to bring together academia and industry to provide a large practical perspective to undergraduate and graduate (including early-stage PhD) students, as well as to young industry personnel. Attendees will be able to extend their knowledge in both theoretical and practical aspects of:

  • Situation Awareness
  • Cognitive Technologies
  • Brain-Computer Interface (BCI)
  • Human-Computer Interaction (HCI)
  • Explainable AI

The International Summer School on Situation Awareness in Cognitive Technologies 2021 will be held from September 6 to 11, 2021 in Magdeburg, Germany, in conjunction with the IEEE International Conference on Human-Machine Systems (ICHMS 2021). It is going to be a great opportunity to learn about new technologies, meet fellow students/employees, discuss ideas with experts, participate in an international conference and simply have a splendid time in the city of Otto von Guericke!

Participants (PhD students only) are encouraged to submit a paper to the PhD Track of the ICHMS 2021, which will also appear in the proceedings of ICHMS. More info regarding this submission can be found here.

How to Apply?

You need to follow a few simple steps to apply for joining the summer school. Please remember the number of participants is limited and the decisions will be made based on your profile.

  • Preparation

Prepare your CV and a possible list of travel and accommodation costs (if you would like to apply for a travel grant).

  • Fill-in your information in the online form isact.cogsy.de/apply and upload your CV to isact.cogsy.de/cv by July 19th 26th, 2021.

  • We will contact you over e-mail once the final decision has been made, and your application has been accepted or rejected; by July 28th, 2021. The decision regarding the travel grants will be communicated at a later date. If you are selected, then you would need to respond with your acceptance by July 30th, 2021.

  • If accepted, you will have to pay a participation fee, according to the following table:

    Student (IEEE Member) €300
    Student (Non-IEEE Member) €350
    Non-Student (IEEE Member) €400
    Non-Student (Non-IEEE Member) €500
The participation fee also covers everyday lunch with the experts at the venue, as well as the social events organised by us. As an added bonus, the participants will also be given USB sticks and access to the easychair platform to get access to the proceedings of the ICHMS 2021.
    * Student: Enrolled as a Bachelor, Master or PhD student at the time of participation
    * For IEEE Member discounts: IEEE Membership should be valid for the month of September, 2021
    * all prices are in Euro

  • You will be informed if you (had applied for and) win one of our limited number of travel grants, which will cover your travel (flight, train or bus) expenses (in full or part) to reach the venue; by July 31st, 2021.

  • You need to pay the participation fee and register yourself by August 14th, 2021. The registration procedure will be communicated to the selected candidates via E-Mail.

  • We are looking forward to having the summer school as an interactive in-person event in the beautiful city of Magdeburg. However, it is difficult to predict the conditions of September about this dynamic situation of COVID-19. We will be prepared to switch to a fully online interactive summer school if necessary. In any way, we will offer ways for virtual/hybrid participation for those participants who are, e.g. due to travel restrictions, unable to attend. If the summer school takes place virtually, the registration fees will be reduced.
Furthermore, we have compiled a non-exhaustive list of regulations you might encounter in different parts of your trip after arriving in Germany:

    • Overall travel regulations: "Re-open EU" mobile app or Here!
    • Host university regulations: Here!
    • Safety regulations of Deutsche Bahn: Here!
    • Safety regulations of local tram and bus network (Sorry!, only available in German): Here!

is ready to welcome you for a fun-filled interactive educational summer school: ISACT 2021

Organising Institute:

Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg, Germany

Named after Otto von Guericke (1602 - 1686), the renowned son of Magdeburg and well-known for his research on the vacuum, the Otto von Guericke University (OVGU) was founded in 1993 and is thus one of the youngest universities in Germany: a place where tradition meets innovation. With nine faculties, the university has gained in importance as a notable institution of teaching and research. Roughly 14,000 students are enrolled at the moment and approximately 25% of them are international students. Around 770 doctoral students, among which 285 are from abroad, are researching in various fields of engineering, natural science, medicine, econonomics, etc. By offerring many interdisciplinary research opportunities, OvGU Magdeburg is one of primal research hub in Germany

Magdeburg, Germany

Emperor Otto the Great and Otto von Guericke left their mark on Magdeburg and are the namesakes of the "Ottostadt", the City of Otto. Nowadays, the 1200-year-old metropolis by the river Elbe, which has been destroyed and rebuilt several times throughout its history, is not only characterised by impressive historic medieval buildings, quaint Baroque façades and monumental districts from the “Gründerzeit” period, but also by its modern architecture.
